What happened to the great left backs?

It seems to me that there is a shortage of that particular position in football. Where are the new Maldini, Roberto Carlos etc? Right now there is a couple like Evra, Cole and even Lahm (yes I know he's mostly a RB....someone WILL MESS THIS UP, WATCH!) I miss those guys!
